Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Creater
Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is an iconic natural landmark in northern Tanzania. This massive, 20-kilometer-wide volcanic caldera is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering breathtaking views and an abundance of wildlife in its self-contained ecosystem. Visitors can witness Africa’s Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and the rare black rhino—along with herds of wildebeests, zebras, and flocks of flamingos around the crater’s soda lake, Lake Magadi.
The Crater is conveniently located 180 kilometers west of Arusha, a journey of about 3 to 4 hours by road, making it easily accessible for safari-goers starting their adventure in the region. From Karatu, a town known for its proximity to several major wildlife attractions, the crater is only 30 kilometers away, just a short 30-minute drive.
This unique destination is a year-round safari paradise, perfect for travelers seeking both stunning landscapes and wildlife encounters.
When To Visit Ngorongoro
Good (Off-Peak Months):
- April: The long rains can make some roads challenging, but the scenery is lush, and the crater is quieter with fewer tourists.
- May: The tail end of the rainy season, with beautiful green landscapes. Wildlife is still abundant, but the wet conditions can affect visibility and access.
Better (Shoulder Season):
- March: The rains begin toward the end of the month, but wildlife is still easy to spot. Fewer crowds make this a more peaceful time to visit.
- November: Short rains begin, but they’re usually not disruptive. The scenery is starting to turn green again after the dry season, and wildlife viewing remains good.
- December: The short rains may linger, but this is a great time for wildlife, and the landscapes are refreshed. Holidays can bring more visitors.
- January: The short rains taper off, leaving lush green grass. Animals are still easy to see, but the season is quieter compared to the busiest months.
- February: Often considered the last of the short rain months, February is good for wildlife viewing. The lush landscape and presence of newborn animals make it a great time for photography.
Best (Peak Season):
- June: The dry season starts, and wildlife becomes easier to spot as vegetation thins. Cooler weather and fewer mosquitoes make for a comfortable visit.
- July: A popular time to visit as the dry season continues, making wildlife viewing excellent, especially in the crater where water is more concentrated.
- August: Prime dry season month with great weather and exceptional wildlife sightings, especially predators.
- September: Still in the dry season, this is one of the best months for wildlife viewing. The weather is excellent, with plenty of wildlife congregating around water sources.
- October: The end of the dry season offers fantastic wildlife viewing as animals gather around remaining water sources. The cooler, dry weather makes it an ideal month.
